Vincent by Barbara Stok (Graphic Novel)

Vincent is another excellent instalment in the fantastic Art Masters series published by Self Made Hero. The book is an effective summary of Vincent van Gogh’s descent into madness and his close relationship with his beloved brother, Theo.

Barbara Stock’s art is deceptively simple – at first. Stok uses bold lines and flat colours to make the book bright and clear, much like the famous light of southern France which inspired so many artists. As van Gogh’s mental health deteriorates, the art becomes increasingly complex, somehow managing to mimic the artist’s idiosyncratic handiwork while staying true to Stok’s own style. The last few pages are particularly beautiful.

I loved the book, and I intend to bleat on about the Art Master series to anyone who cares to listen!
